After months of prep and negotiation, and against the wishes of co-founder Elon Musk, the #Artificial Intelligence giant reorganized itself into a for-profit corporation within a larger non-profit foundation. 
The non-profit OpenAI Foundation maintains legal control over the public benefit corporation — OpenAI Group — holds on to a significant stake, and appoints the board of directors, though the Group can still acquire companies or raise new funds without authorization. 
As for early OpenAI backers Microsoft, they hang on to a 27% stake (valued presently at $135 billion), while extending their IP rights over OpenAI’s models through 2032. (That infamous AGI clause remains in play: if OpenAI believes it has reached this milestone, they’ll submit the model to an independent expert panel to verify their findings.)

I’m Sam, I’m the curriculum director at Gregorio Perfecto High School in Manila, Philippines. I’ve been an educator and administrator for just over 25 years. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he doesn’t want the government to bail them out if the company fails. “If we screw up and can’t fix it, we should fail, and other companies will continue on doing good work and servicing customers,” Altman said in an X post on Thursday.

Altman also said that OpenAI expects future revenue growth, ranging from hardware AI devices to robotics to an “AI cloud” to drive revenue growth that could help the company fund its $1.4 trillion in commitments over the next eight years.

Altman’s comments come after OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar, on Wednesday, suggested a federal backstop could support financing AI chips and data centers that could help the U.S. stay competitive globally.

“We’re looking for an ecosystem of banks, private equity, maybe even governmental, the ways governments can come to bear,” she said. Friar later walked back her comments in a LinkedIn post, stating that OpenAI isn’t seeking a government backstop for its infrastructure projects.

In his X post, Altman added that while OpenAI doesn’t have a government backstop for its data center projects, OpenAI has discussed government loan guarantees to support the development of semiconductor fabrication plants in the U.S. in order to strengthen the domestic chip supply chain.

Altman named a long list of upcoming business he thinks will generate significant revenue.
