The fake Pentagon explosion image moved markets, and it’s not hard to see it driving even worse reactions.  I have been doubting the veracity of photos (and videos) for a long while.

The collapse of public trust in what was previously acceptable as evidence... that's a very, very serious development. Many commentators over the last few years have called out an erosive social problem abetted and enabled by the internet -- people living in "silos" of filtered and curated information, so that there is no consensus reality any more.
Hard documentary evidence -- like audio recordings, photos and video -- is one of the few ways to establish consensus reality. Once people start doubting the authenticity of *all* documentary media, once all these forms of recorded evidence can be convincingly faked, we're all free to "choose our own reality" without fear of contradiction.

For sure and much worse.  It swings markets today, but not hard to imagine tomorrow it catalyzes genocide, and then it fools a trigger happy world leader…

If primitive newsfeed algorithms can divide a nation in their belief of reality (like election outcomes) and anonymous prophets can trigger violent conspiracy (like Qanon), what happens when an a cutting edge AI that knows even better where our cognitive vulnerabilities are is weaponized to personally manipulate us?

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
