On this TED AI Show podcast, Toner discussed internal events that led to Sam Altman's firing last year. In addition to not informing the board ahead of ChatGPT's launch, she alleged that the CEO had been "withholding information, misrepresenting things that were happening at the company, in some cases outright lying to the board."

Toner claims the four board members who fired Altman concluded, "that we just couldn’t believe things that Sam was telling us, and that’s just a completely unworkable place to be in as a board."

OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, who made key technological breakthroughs for the artificial intelligence developer, said Tuesday on X that he was leaving the Microsoft-backed startup for a new project, which he didn’t elaborate about. Sutskever also co-founded the firm in 2015 and last fall helped lead a board ouster of CEO Sam Altman before reversing course and supporting Altman’s return shortly after the firing. Jan Leike, another executive who worked with Sutskever on safeguarding future AI and was viewed as his ally also resigned, said a person who was told about it.

The resignations come after months of speculation about whether Sutskever would make amends with Altman and stay at the ChatGPT creator despite the prior drama. Sutskever did not return to OpenAI’s new board of directors that was installed after Altman’s return, whereas Altman has also regained his position on the board. In a post on X, CEO Sam Altman said that “This is very sad to me…OpenAI would not be what it is without” Sutskever. OpenAI researcher Jakub Pachocki will replace Sutskever, Altman said.
