Failure’s part of the profit process… and Apple can afford to fail. 

As its hardware sales slow, Apple’s made big, expensive bets to enter new markets, as it should. 

Ofc it hasn’t always gone well: it axed its decade-long effort to build a self-driving EV.  And sales of its $3.5K Vision Pro VR headset, rolled out this year, have disappointed (it’s said to be considering ending production). 

But the Apple Watch was a hit, making the company a leader in the connected fitness market, and it’s hoping for a repeat in the smart-home space as @Bobby pointed out

27 years ago on Sept. 28, 1997: Apple’s “Think Different” commercial debuted. At the time, Apple was nearly bankrupt. The campaign played a role in Apple’s turnaround.

Today, Vision Pro is a failure and  hasn't released novel hardware in a decade and is using AI to punch down at the very people who are supposed to use the technology.  With its new ads, Apple seems to be pitching its AI tools as a cure for the dumb and lazy. But they’re also using them as a stand-in for basic human consideration.

So far, Apple Intelligence is showing us how to construct a false impression of ourselves, with no incentive to get better.
