Since Photoshop was introduced in 1987 I'm going to have to say your wrong about that. There was no technological capability to have "fake" people generated.

I'm hard pressed to see how someone who's spent their entire career as an actor "working alongside of these tools".
Quite simply these tools are intended to either replace skilled human workers with less skilled (and thus less expensive) workers. A process known as deskilling. Or, as in this case, completely remove humans from the jobs entirely.
There have been numerous sociological and economic studies of the introduction of automation since the beginning of the Industrial revolution that support this conclusion.
I think there's a lot of blind techno-faith and rationalization going on judging from the comments.
