Microsoft revealed new AI features at its Build developer conference today. Here's the shortlist:

- Microsoft unveiled Copilot Agents, which are AI business assistants that automatically perform assigned tasks in the background. 
- Microsoft is now testing the AI agents, which "independently and proactively orchestrate tasks for you," with plans for a public preview later this year.
- Microsoft launched Phi-3-vision, a compact AI model that reads text and analyzes images on mobile devices.
- Its new "Team Copilot" AI assistant manages meetings, projects, and tasks within Microsoft Teams.
- Microsoft Edge now translates YouTube and other videos as you watch.

Altman recently talked up the mutual benefits of the Microsoft-OpenAI partnership. Amid near-weekly headlines about tensions between the companies related to OpenAI's efforts to convert into a more traditional for-profit enterprise, Altman suggested that much of the journalism is false or overblown. "Obviously in any deep partnership, there are points of tension, and we certainly have those,” he said. “But on the whole, it’s been like really wonderfully good for both companies.”

At that point, Microsoft would lose access to OpenAI’s most advanced technology. And if the board determines that the AGI “has the capability to generate” upwards of $130 billion in profits, Microsoft would lose its exclusive rights to use and sell any OpenAI’s technology, though Microsoft can contest the board’s decision and review it with outside financial experts.

As the restructuring-related talks with Microsoft stalled, OpenAI has in recent months implied it could soon declare AGI. Microsoft executives have disagreed that the company is close to that point.

That wouldn’t wrap up the era of Microsoft-OpenAI, as the two firms have a deal through 2030. But if Microsoft says no thanks to what OpenAI has in mind, the two companies are going to prove frosty roommates for the next half decade. And, presumably, OpenAI won’t do as well without its preferred structural reformation.

What a mess. Most likely, the two firms work it out, and what we’re seeing in the press is little more than two companies trying to publicly whack the other into giving ground. Or not. But I suspect that OpenAI will get most of what it wants, once Microsoft calculates the minimum it’s willing to accept, and then getting just a bit more.

The startup is locked in negotiations with Microsoft over the terms of that restructuring and changes to its existing contract with the software giant, which can veto OpenAI’s plans. In exchange for the 33% stake, OpenAI wants Microsoft to relinquish its right to 49% of OpenAI’s future profits up to a certain cap, as well as 20% of OpenAI’s revenue and the right to use its intellectual property through 2030. The restructuring of the for-profit unit with traditional equity would allow OpenAI to go public.

At the same time, Microsoft is angling for its own concessions from OpenAI, including continued access to the startup’s IP after the current commercial deal between the companies ends in 2030.
