Mira Murati, the former chief technology officer at OpenAI, announced her new AI startup, Thinking Machines Lab, in a blog post on Tuesday. The company will focus on AI research and product-building, with an emphasis on publishing research widely. It will aim to build AI that can understand and produce information in a variety of modalities, such as text, images and audio, and going beyond mathematics and programming, two fields in which conversational AI has excelled so far.

Thinking Machines Lab currently has 29 employees, more than two-thirds of which hail from Murati’s former employer OpenAI, according to the blog post. The Information first reported on the startup’s name and focus last month.

Murati recruited tens of researchers and employees from the ChatGPT maker in the months following her dramatic exit. More recently, OpenAI asked a major investor to make the pitch to employees that staying at the company would be the smartest financial decision.

The startup founded by former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati has hired OpenAI co-founder John Schulman, according to people who have spoken to the startup’s staff.

Schulman, an AI researcher whose team at OpenAI was responsible for innovations that contributed to the success of ChatGPT, had left for rival Anthropic last fall during a period of executive turnover that included Murati’s departure. Schulman didn’t respond to a request for comment, and a spokesperson for Murati declined to comment.

Murati’s nascent startup, known as Thinking Machines Lab, has poached several prominent researchers from OpenAI, including ex-head of post-training Barret Zoph and former senior researcher Luke Metz. Murati has told potential investors that it aims to create AI that can handle complex tasks.
