A group of experts authored 23 international policy proposals for AI, saying that allowing AI systems to develop before understanding the risks threatens society at large. The group included some of the “godfathers” of AI, who argue that #Artificial Intelligence  developers need to set aside a substantial part of their budget for safety research and enforcement.

I’m going to say something true which will not endear me to many of my friends in the industry.  But if you know me, you know I don’t care what the hive mind “thinks”.

Here goes.

As mortality approaches the front door, Hinton has taken a step to disavow his eager participation in the creation of AI.  This disavowal cost him nothing, and therefore means nothing.

So for the cheap seats:  When Titans tell you they care about “AI safety”, remember that they do not care for the little people.  They may issue after the fact “apologies” or tokens of “regret”.  But when it matters, they are always eager to chase the brass ring regardless of the potential or actual costs to humanity.  They are, as my fearless grandmother would have said, bloodless.  

And so, dear friends, I invite you to deal with their phony contrition accordingly.

A few weeks ago, he watched the movie Don’t Look Up, in which an asteroid zips toward Earth, nobody can agree what to do about it, and everyone dies—an allegory for how the world is failing to address climate change.

“I think it’s like that with #Artificial Intelligence ,” he says, and with other big intractable problems as well. “The US can’t even agree to keep assault rifles out of the hands of teenage boys,” he says.

Hinton’s argument is sobering. I share his bleak assessment of people’s collective inability to act when faced with serious threats. It is also true that AI risks causing real harm—upending the job market, entrenching inequality, worsening sexism and racism, and more. We need to focus on those problems. But I still can’t make the jump from large language models to robot overlords. Perhaps I’m an optimist.
