Safe Superintelligence, an artificial intelligence startup co-founded by OpenAI's former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever last year, is in talks to raise funding at a valuation of at least $20 billion, four sources told Reuters.

Safe Superintelligence, the secretive AI lab co-founded by OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, confirmed the departure of co-founder and venture capital investor Daniel Gross. Sutskever is now CEO and will continue to oversee the company’s technical team. In a post on X, Sutskever appeared to address previous reporting that Meta had previously made a bid to acquire Safe Superintelligence. “You might have heard rumors of companies looking to acquire us. We are flattered by their attention but are focused on seeing our work through,” he wrote. Gross’s last day was June 29, according to the post. Gross is joining Meta to work on the company’s AI efforts, according to Bloomberg. The Information was first to report that Gross was in advanced talks to join Meta. Meta did not respond to a request for comment. In a post on X, Gross said that he is “honored to have been able to assist in getting SSI off the ground. The chip company invested a “substantial” but undisclosed amount into the AI lab from former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, as part of a long-term overall partnership. (According to WSJ, Nvidia reached the deal after getting a sneak peek into the relatively covert state of the startup’s research.) Safe Superintelligence will now receive access to a lot of GPU hardware — enough to increase its resources by “orders of magnitude.” There’s not a TON of insight available yet into exactly what Sutskever and his team are building, but their public goal is “straight shot” research into the a secure form of AGI. Did Ilya Sutskever just win the lottery? Trump’s declaration that he was changing the name of artificial intelligence to superintelligence—SI instead of AI—could be great news for Sutskever’s AI startup, Safe Superintelligence Inc., or SSI. If Trump succeeds in replacing the AI term with SI, Sutskever’s company has the perfect brand. Sutskever might be even better off than Meta Platforms, whose CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, seems to be thinking along the same lines as Trump. Zuckerberg likes to talk about personal superintelligence, and his AI unit is called Meta Superintelligence Labs. (What’s the bet that most people prefer their super intelligence to be safe rather than personal?) Still, neither Sutskever nor Zuckerberg should celebrate yet. While Trump might be able to persuade Apple and Google to partially adopt the Lake America name in place of Lake Ontario, it’s hard to see anyone listening to him on AI.
