Not really. I can’t think of an economy more capitalistic than America where you have CEOs making 50 million a year while the janitor at that same company needs federal assistance to live. We bow down to corporate greed in every sense of the word and we live from one quarterly statement to the next.

I’m inclined to back the government when they say it’s a big enough risk to our country to allow China to have access to the technology. This doesn’t seem to be a general/global prohibition; is it?

Kind of has a different tone to it doesn't it? Its fairly easy to justify preventing nuclear technology from proliferating, because the American public doesn't really want to be nuked. Somewhat harder to justify blatant protectionism which has the sole purpose of freezing China out of AI, and keeping them dependent on American companies. You might as well suggest the banana republics were essential for national security too.

This has zero to do with national security and more to do with being in control of things. China uses a lot of ai for more than just military. If they become an ai leader the US fears that it will loose the industrial lead. This used to be the case when GM, Boeing, GE and IBM were the industrial front runners for the US government. The government went out of its way to sabotage similar industries even in allied nations.
