We are getting closer to a world where nothing can be trusted online:

It's a tool that can perform real-time face-swapping during live broadcasts and video calls.

• Video calls: Change your face in real-time during a video call or use a pre-recorded video
• Live-streaming: Adjust your facial expressions or entire appearance
• Facial animator: Control static facial images and manipulate them through your own face

We've seen another example pop up in April 2024 with Microsoft's hyper-realistic talking head AI: VASA-1.

It can generate lifelike talking faces of virtual characters all from a single static image and audio clip.

My takeaways:

• Proof of authenticity will be an absolute must to solve what is coming
• I believe real-world interaction is more important than ever
• Zoom meetings are about to get a whole lot more interesting

Meta has flooded its social media platforms with artificial intelligence. Soon enough, Meta AI will be everywhere: In your Facebook news feed, Instagram search bar, and even your conversations with friends on Messenger. The company’s Llama 3 large language model is also perhaps the most powerful open-source model on the market (though its openness is an ongoing debate). Meta is flexing its muscle and betting that AI ubiquity will actually improve user experience. 

So far, at least, that looks like a misguided bet.

Nowhere is that clearer than on Instagram where the search function, once a place to look up a friend’s account, now exists seemingly to usher users into conversation with a chatbot. “Ask Meta AI anything” it now reads in my search bar. Um, no. I just want to look up my dog’s daycare to see if they posted any pictures of her.

If Meta thinks that users are craving more AI, they’re ignoring the fact that the Facebook and Instagram experience is already full of AI.

a culture of sameness will hold us back, and the businesses who create unique community experiences will win. There is a movement away from monolithic experiences like McDonalds that feel the same nearly everywhere you go to brands that we feel connected to and signal who we are.

In a world where artificial intelligence is creating the majority of content we consume (whether we realize it or not), the overall content quality will go down. It will be consistent, but mediocre. 

The internet will look and feel very different due to the influx of AI content. Very fast-food like. Look and feel like real food, but not good for us.

As the expression of ideas becomes exponentially easier, the ideas themselves become more of the differentiator. Good ideas aren’t derived solely from logic and patterns of the past; they’re also the product of human traumas, mistakes of the eye, and uniquely human ingenuity. I am excited about AI, but I am ultimately long on creativity (aka humanity). With fundamentally easier execution of ideas and more ideas actually seeing the light of day, perhaps meritocracy will kick in and help the best ideas — now sourced from a far greater pool of creators — get the best opportunity and reach the most people.
